County councillors will consider this month whether or not the Council makes a formal response to the Government's White Paper 'Strong and Prosperous Communities'.

The White Paper issued at the end of October 2006 invited councils to put forward proposals to provide services in a different and improved way, by January 25.

Since the White Paper was published various discussions both within the Council and with partners have ranged around four different options for future local government structures in Nottinghamshire.

Leader of the County Council, Councillor David Kirkham, said "My personal preference is to seek to make real progress in delivering joined up services, alongside significant financial savings within the two-tier system.

"But the White Paper invited councils to consider whether or not to put together a business case for unitary (all purpose) structures for two-tier areas.

"I have asked for such a case to be prepared as councillors need to be in a position to consider whether a unitary council for Nottinghamshire could bring significant benefits for the people of the county."

The County Council will decide how it wants to proceed at a full Council meeting on January 18.
