The Making Nottinghamshire a Better Place awareness campaign ran from December 2008 through to February 2009 to encourage people to make the most of key services run by the County Council.

The adverts shown below were placed across the county as part of the campaign.

The Council is concerned that residents are feeling the pinch due to the current problems with the global economy. This campaign aimed to illustrate ways in which people can use the authority’s services to improve their lives with little or no cost.

Country parks

Family days out can be expensive but admission to one of the County Council-managed country parks – Sherwood, Rufford and Bestwood – is free, with just a small car parking charge at two of the parks during peak season.

Explore the great outdoors and be at one with nature in the beautiful surroundings of the country parks. The parks also host a large number of events throughout the year.

Trading standards

Sub-standard work carried out by unreputable trades people is not only upsetting for those affected, it can cost thousands of pounds to rectify. The Buy with Confidence scheme ( www.buywithconfidence.gov.uk) is managed in the county by the County Council in partnership with Nottingham City Council and Age Concern. It helps residents to find local trustworthy trades people, including plumbers, builders and gardeners, that have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards to ensure that they operate in a legal, honest and fair way.

Youth services

Nottinghamshire's Youth Service is one of the largest in the UK and offers a wide range of support and opportunities - including arts, sports and cultural activities - through its county-wide network of projects.

This includes 45 youth centres and clubs for teenagers, 8 mobile youth centres, 14 specialist clubs for disabled young people and 18 clubs for young people aged 9 - 13.

Visit the Youthzone for more information.

Bus services

The County Council supports a range of local and leisure bus services designed to improve transport links to residents in evenings and at weekends and to attractions and other facilities in the county.

These include services into Sherwood Forest as well as rural bus services between Retford and Newark and Newark and Bingham.

Benefits for older people

The County Council appreciates that older people are feeling the financial pressures of rising food and energy costs and are not always aware of all the benefits that they may be able to claim to make their lives easier.

The Council provides advice on the full range of social security benefits available to people living in Nottinghamshire by providing leaflets about benefits, an advice line every weekday; and advice sessions throughout the county in community locations including County Contact Centres.
