Tales of hardship are Nottinghamshire's top summer reads!
Stories of hardship and woe were Nottinghamshire's top three library loans this summer!
It may be a sign of the times, but this summer the county's holiday makers turned to tales of people battling adversity to keep them entertained.
The top three loans from the city and county's libraries this summer were:
- Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris
- A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini
- Random Acts of Heroic Love by Danny Scheinmann.
They are about job losses in a time of recession, war torn Afghanistan and two men separated from their loves by war and death.
Sheelagh Gallagher, Reading Development Officer for Nottinghamshire County Council's Library Service, said:
"We're used to people borrowing romance and thrillers over the summer – but this year people are choosing tales of adversity. I'm not sure whether this is linked to the economic downturn or whether it's down to Richard and Judy!
"Despite their gloomy subject matter they're all great reads, wherever you are this summer. 'Then We Came to the End' is actually very funny, 'A Thousand Splendid Suns' is a fascinating insight into the lives of afghani women and 'Random Acts of Heroic Love' is heart-wrenching.
"It's National Year of Reading and it’s good to see Nottinghamshire people are flocking to join our libraries this summer and that they’re trying out lots of exciting new authors as well as the old favourites."
Other not very jolly titles in the top twenty include ‘The Loner’ by Josephine Cox, 'Bad Luck and Trouble' by Lee Child and 'You’ve been Warned' by Lee Child.
