Beeston brain
Come and see the huge brain at Beeston!
Budding brain surgeons and creative people from Beeston have been working with local artist Dave Wood to create a giant brain in the middle of Beeston Library.
The Brain is made of willow, newspaper and gum and is hollow inside to allow library visitors to post their creative thoughts into the right or left side – depending on the subject matter. It will be on display in the library throughout this summer.
Participants, including mental health workers, students and members of the public, considered thought processes, feelings and mental health as they worked together on the Brain sculpture.
Nottinghamshire Library Service successfully bid for funding for the Brain sculpture through the BBC’s Headroom mental health project. Dave says:
“I’m hoping this is going to get people thinking creatively. We want people to put their thoughts into words and post them into different parts of The Brain. The aim is to show how being creative can boost your mental wellbeing.”
The three days of sculpture took place in July and was followed by a creative writing workshop.
The sculpture is all part of Nottinghamshire Libraries’ involvement in the National Year of Reading. The campaign aims to get everyone in the county to enjoy reading, books, literature and language in its many forms.
