Cutting the cake at the Mapperley Library reopening Mapperley Library re-opened on 1 September after a £250,000 major refurbishment.

To celebrate the re-vitalisation, a Fun Day with children’s activities, a magic show, cake balloons and a book doctor session was held and all library customers, new and old, were invited.

The modern, bright and welcoming new facilities are now far more accessible and user friendly, with new furnishings, free fast broadband connection, modern décor, great coffee and £10k of new books and DVDs to enjoy.

The first ever self service kiosk in the county’s libraries is also being piloted at Mapperley. After just one week at least 70 percent of all book and DVD loans were going through the new machine. With just a little help from the librarians, customers of all ages have found the machine easy and quick to operate and counter queuing has been reduced or eliminated.

An extension has been built onto the back of the library to allow the children’s section to be brought down to the ground floor. This has improved access for wheelchairs, pushchairs and toddlers and ensures that the library complies with the Disability Discrimination Act.

Nottinghamshire County Councillor Steve Carroll, Cabinet Member for Culture, said: “Mapperley is the eleventh library we have refurbished in the last three years. We want to make libraries more inviting places with a wider range of modern facilities. These refurbishments, along with a programme of exciting activities in libraries, seem to be really paying off as we’ve seen a huge surge in new members recently.

“I hope lots of local people, especially those who haven’t been in a library for a few years, call in here and see the difference for themselves.”
