Throughout July, people took part in a series of song lyric quizzes devised by the librarians at Kirkby Library.
The quiz was all part of National Year of Reading which is taking place in libraries across the county. The theme for July was Rhythm and Rhyme and the aim of the Kirkby quiz was to get people thinking about lyrics, rhythm and poetry, in a fun but challenging way.
Most of the answers to the questions could be found in reference books or on computers in the library and looking up the answers was encouraged.
“People don’t realise how many musical resources are available in libraries,” said Chris Latimer, librarian for the Nottinghamshire Library Service. “We’ve got music by everyone from Take That to Tchaikovsky, all sorts of CDs from reggae to Rachmaninov, guides on how to play instruments, scores from musicals, biographies of famous singers and of course the Guinness Book of Hit Singles which should be in big demand.”
The tables were turned on Chris and her colleagues as library visitors also challenged the librarians to “name that tune” or identify words from a poem during July:
"It’s so annoying when you’ve got some lyrics or lines on the tip of your tongue but you can’t quite remember who sang the song or wrote the poem. We wanted to prove to people that libraries are a great place to research common queries."
