Chocolate and chick lit pulls in the ladies to Misterton Library
Bridget Jones would love it – a party full of girls with a chocolate fountain, make-up demonstration and lots of “chick lit” (literature that appeals to females) to chat about.
The latest way of attracting people into libraries is proving highly successful in Misterton where senior library assistant Jane Kilpatrick held her fourth annual Chick Lit event in August. She says:
“This is National Year of Reading and we’re pulling out all the stops to get people back to libraries. It’s not too difficult enticing the ladies with a chocolate fountain and a chick lit picture quiz based on the novels. Men are invited, but so far none have dared to turn up!”
The idea is that after an evening of girlie indulgence everyone takes away one of 30 latest “Chick Lit” novels from the library.
"We don’t mind what people want to read at Misterton as long as they enjoy books and come back for more. Personally I’m as happy reading the Sophie Kinsella 'Shopaholic' novels as I am with Jane Austen," says Jane.

Examples of Chick Literature authors whose novels are available from Misterton and other County Libraries are: Sophie Kinsella, Kate Harrison, Freya North, Jane Green, Zoe Barnes and Helen Fielding (who wrote the Bridgit Jones books as well as some more serious novels).
