John Drake Flint and silver The author was inspired to write this prequel to “Treasure Island” by all the unanswered questions he found in Stevenson’s classic tale. John Silver had never killed a man before encountering pirates on the high seas and finishing six of them off with his cutlass. Adventures follow and lead him to Captain Flint and a successful fortune seeking partnership, until a woman comes between them.
Suzannah Dunn The Queen’s sorrow The tragedy of Mary Tudor’s life is shown in the way all her hopes and dreams on finally becoming Queen come to nothing. She achieves power, but fails to be loved by her husband or to bear the much wanted child and heir, and her religious fervour leads to more and more extreme measures.
Justin Evans A good and happy child Part psychological thriller and part horror story. George Davies finds that he can’t bring himself to hold his newborn baby so undergoes therapy to uncover childhood memories which may be at the root of his problems. As a ten year old he was plagued by ominous visions and became violent. Is he over imaginative, mentally ill or possessed?
Jason Goodwin Bellini card A third instalment of the historical crime series set in Istanbul which began with “The Janissary tree”. Sam Hayes Unspoken A secret is about to come to light which has the potential to destroy a close knit family. Mary has been a devoted mother and grandmother but her family know nothing about her past. Hayes’ previous book was “Blood ties” - a very successful thriller full of twists.
Simon Kernick Deadline Richard and Judy highlighted Kernick’s novel “Relentless” as one of their summer reads, and this new race against time thriller should prove equally gripping. A woman returns home from work to find her teenage daughter is missing and kidnappers demand a huge ransom. Her husband is also missing; they have only been married for two years, how well does she really know him?
Bethan Roberts A good plain cook This story is set in the 1930s when Kitty Allen answers an advertisement for a position as a cook, even though she can’t boil an egg. Her employer is living a bohemian lifestyle with her daughter and lover, and has some very unconventional attitudes for pre-war Sussex. Nude sunbathing and a leaning towards communism are some of the things that go on, but their carefree existence is doomed.
Irvine Welsh Crime DI Ray Lennox thinks that a holiday in Florida will help him recover from a breakdown induced by stress, cocaine abuse and an investigation into a horrifying child sex murder case.
