If you need to find more ways of getting primary school boys into books, here are five quick tips that may help...
1. Look to the stars
Boys’ very favourite books are often linked to the latest high-profile TV series or films. Doctor Who and the Simpsons are popular, and thanks to the success of the Pirates of the Caribbean, anything pirate-related goes down a treat.
Next time you visit the library, why not get your son to choose his favourite DVDs, and ask the librarian if there are any books, comics or annuals that tie-in to the film?
2. Pick a subject
Instead of having a favourite book, boys often have a favourite subject that they like to read about - like dinosaurs, science or wildlife.
Take a trip to the library during half-term and encourage your son to scour the library for fact and fiction on the topic.
3. Remember that it's about more than just novels
Boys don’t just read novels. They also often enjoy comics, fact books and even newspapers. Manga is also really popular with boys today.
At the library, point out graphic novels and comics, and check out children’s history and science books.
4. Get them hooked on a series
Books that form part of a series are great for boys, as once they enjoy one they often get hooked and can’t wait to read the next title.
The Horrible Science series by Nick Arnold is a best-seller they may like. But remember to try and vary their reading habits from time to time.
5. Talk to your librarian!
Library staff can really help when it comes to choosing books for boys – after all, helping everyone to get the most out reading is what they are there for!
Libraries also have lots of activities that can help get children more involved in libraries and reading, such as regular writing groups, and imaginative initiatives like the Mad Science sessions, which have recently been taking place.
Enquire about activities at your local library.
