Worksop community hub

The existing library

The existing library was built in the late 1930s and the accommodation it provides does not allow for the delivery of a modern library service.

At present there are 211,000 books issued each year and this is predicted to rise to over 265,000. Similarly the number of visitors at present is 143,000 a year and this is predicted to rise by a maximum of 30 percent to over 186,000.

The new library needs to be nearly twice the existing floor area to accommodate the projected increase.

Community Hub Update July 2008

The Design team have now submitted a planning application for the new communty hub.

Project objectives

The proposal is to create a multi-purpose building that will provide:

  • A library which is nearly double the size of the existing one and will increase the facilities available to local people and promote lifelong learning
  • An adult day services facility
  • A registration service and ceremony room
  • New facilities for young people in the area
  • A flexible venue for a range of services and community activities
  • A range of interview and meeting rooms to encourage learning and cultural activities
  • A cafe
  • An attractive place which people will want to visit.

The new design

The proposed design is intended to:

  • Provide a positive aesthetic contribution to the surrounding area
  • Complement the local area and park
  • Provide an attractive public space
  • Be at the forefront of sustainable design
  • Be a link to the town centre and contribute to the changing face of Worksop.
