How can I help my child with homework?
- Encourage them to start their homework as soon as they get it, not wait until the last minute
- Make sure they understand what they have been asked to do. Secondary age pupils should have something written in their planner or homework diary
- Ask your child to explain the homework task and how it follows on from what they were studying at school. This should set the work in context
- Nominate somewhere at home as a homework area. It needs a flat surface, good lighting and resources such as pens, pencils, rulers, a dictionary and notebook to hand
- Set up a daily routine. Plan a homework timetable so you both know what your child needs to do and when
- Don’t be tempted to do the work for them. It might enable them to hand the work in on time but won’t help them develop the skills they need for the future
- Help your child to become an independent learner. Explain how to look up information or find a word in a dictionary rather than simply giving an answer in order to get the task finished
- Don't be tempted to teach your child methods you used at school. They may be taught differently now
- Turn off the television while your child is doing homework but do let them listen to music if they find it helpful
- Discourage your child from copying straight from books or the internet. Talk about the information together, work out the key facts and help your child to write these down as brief notes
- Be positive about your child's attempts and don't let homework become a chore
- Don't be tempted to correct your child’s homework. Schools need to know how much they understand and can do independently
- All libraries will have relevant resources, including internet access that your child can use
- Do ask library staff for help. They can make sure your child finds the right information at the right level.

What if I can't get to Planet Homework?
You can use your local library.
