What is it?

The IGI is an index of names and other details compiled by the Church of the Latter-Day Saints (the Mormons). It's an alphabetical list of many of the names which appear in the parish registers and is available, on microfiche, at Nottinghamshire Archives and some libraries. It covers the period from around 1600 to 1840. It's a worldwide database, arranged in county order for England. This means that all people on the index who lived in Nottinghamshire with the name Thomas Richmond appear in one continuous list.

How to use it:

The IGI is in alphabetical order. All you need is the surname you wish to check.

Beware...

It isn't a list of all names that appear in the parish registers. It only covers baptisms and marriages in Nottinghamshire and is based on the Bishop’s Transcripts (contemporary copies of the parish registers) which are incomplete. It only covers the period from around 1600 to 1840 and there are some transcription errors.

The IGI is also available online - why not visit their website at: www.familysearch.org.
