Competitive swimming in Nottinghamshire

There are 7,000 registered competitive swimmers in Nottinghamshire and over 30 registered swimming clubs.

How is the sport organised?

The Amateur Swimming Association controls the sport nationally.
Locally, it's controlled by the Nottinghamshire Swimming Association.
Swimming clubs in the County provide a comprehensive service but don't have the facilities or professional coaching to allow the better swimmers in the County to progress to national and international standard.
The Nottinghamshire County Council Swimming Training Scheme attempts to fill this gap and provides a focal point for County swimmers to train together.

Swim squad

The Swim squad offers professional coaching in organised training groups which train at various pools within the City and the County.

Squad swimmers standard training time

Squad Age Level Training time per week
Nottingham A 30 14 - 28 National and international 20 hours
Nottingham B1 25 13 - 16 National and international 16.5 hours
Nottingham B2 25 11 - 14 County and Midland 16 hours

Other training schemes

Mansfield and Bassetlaw District Councils also provide swimming training schemes which are organised so that they are part of the Nottinghamshire County Council scheme and compliment the County swimming structure.

Development groups

All squads have development groups which are organised independently of the swimming scheme and provide a necessary link between the training scheme and base clubs.

Who can participate?

The Nottinghamshire County Council Swimming Training Scheme is open to residents of Nottinghamshire who can achieve the necessary time standards. This usually involves being able to achieve Midland District qualifying times and National qualifying times. For current qualifying times visit www.britishswimming.org

Other opportunities for swimmers

Swimmers who are not at this standard can access swimming training within one of the 30 swimming clubs in the County. Clubs provide various opportunities from Learn to swim through to Master swimming so that all abilities and interests are catered for.
