There are several ways to enjoy the sport of canoeing:

Children's and advanced courses run annually - application forms are available from our administration office.

Touring

Ranging from a gentle potter on rivers, canals and lakes to more advanced trips on wild water or the sea. This form of canoeing can be combined with camping if the kit is carried in the boat.

Slalom

Timed competition on fast moving water where you have to manoeuvre through gates set above the water.

Wild water racing

Time trial competition down fast upland white water rivers - two to six miles long.

Sprint racing

Racing in lanes on flat, still water in long racing canoes and kayaks over distances from 200 m to 10 km. Races are in singles, doubles or fours.

Marathon

Competitors race down rivers, lakes or canals taking in any hazards on the way - shooting rapids, getting around locks or bridges. Courses are from 3 to 12 miles, some can be much longer.

Canoe polo

A fast swimming pool game with teams of five players.

Fast competition where paddlers perform tricks and manoeuvres on white water.

FAQs

What equipment do I need to take part?

A change of clothing is essential.
Summer: shorts or tracksuit bottoms, t-shirt, trainers, windproof anorak.
Winter: thermal clothing, wetsuit, warm hat, and anorak.
You need to be able to swim at least 50m in your canoeing clothes.
All organisations offering beginners' courses provide all canoeing equipment - boats, paddles and life jackets.
All compulsory capsize drills are performed in swimming pools.

Where can I go canoeing?

We run sessions at various locations throughout the county including Holme Pierrepont, Sandhill Lake, Worksop, Kings Mill reservoir, Mansfield, and Nottingham kayak club.

Many leisure centres run canoeing sessions in their swimming pools, they are ideal for beginners.
