Nottinghamshire Sports Awards 2010
Nottinghamshire County Council hosted this year’s Nottinghamshire Sports Awards on Monday 21 February at the Becket School, West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire.
350 guests celebrated the achievements of athletes and rewarded administrators, coaches and officials in Nottinghamshire sport in what has been another remarkable year for the county.
BBC East Midlands Today presenter Mark Shardlow hosted the evening, along with colleague Angela Rafferty, and was joined by guests from professional sport, including Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Notts County, and players from the Nottingham Panthers, and Nottingham Rugby, as well as Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington.
The winners were announced from a shortlist of up to six in each category. There were 2 new awards this year for Junior Coach of the Year, and Breakthrough of the Year as well as the public vote award for Outstanding Achievement of the Year which attracted over 1800 on-line votes.
Councillor Kay Cutts, Leader of Nottinghamshire County Council, attended the event to present some of the junior awards.
Councillor John Cottee, Cabinet Member for Culture and Community, said: "These awards highlight both our current performers and our stars of the future that will continue our reputation as 'the sporting county’. They also acknowledge the backroom staff – the countless coaches, administrators, and other volunteers who put so much hard work into supporting sport across the county.

Club of the Year
Boots Hockey Club
Many club members volunteered this year to ensure the smooth running and continual growth of the club. A variety of training opportunities supported this including umpiring, and coaching courses as well as safeguarding, first aid, and other coach education workshops relevant to identified training needs.
The season saw a 47% increase in membership across all sections with discounted rates for low income groups, full time education, or unemployed encouraging all sections of the community. The club has developed partnerships with many external agencies and works hard to promote the sport in road-shows and at events.
Securing a formal school club link with Rushcliffe School and others is now a priority along with training more coaches and umpires to support the growing membership.
Mansfield Giants Basketball Club
This year, the club has introduced a coach mentoring programme, table officials have been trained, and club statisticians recruited. With over 100 playing members, Giants run a mixed central Venue summer league to enhance playing and volunteer development opportunities.
The Giants recently became involved with DARE UK, working in schools and the local community, delivering a programme with disaffected youth and a youth media group was set up to encourage young people from the area to promote the club in return for training in areas such as photography and Photoshop. Club events and matches are now widely promoted, offering discounts for Mansfield residents.
Partnerships for the club include 5 School Sport Partnerships, Mansfield CVS, England Basketball, Mansfield Sports Forum, and the Nottinghamshire Basketball Association alongside local development officers.
Bingham Cricket Club
After supporting 3 level 1, and a level 2 coach, the club’s youth structure grew by over 30% this year to over 100 members with 15% volunteering weekly.
Bingham ran coaching sessions in eight local schools, encouraging over a dozen youngsters to join. A close link with the local football club also allowed taster sessions to be offered to over 30 youngsters. A project with schools to encourage young girls to play resulted in a girls hardball team and partnership with Cropwell Butler village council helped re-start cricket in the village.
The club intends to grow our coaching volunteer base by 50% over the coming 18 months. In addition, Bingham will be participating in the Chance to Shine programme, which should increase their youth membership by over 50% over the coming months.
Coach of the Year – Community
Robert Saunders - Ice Hockey
Current head coach at Sutton Sting, Bob gives up around 40 hours a week to help teams. He coaches the Under 12 and Under 18 sides, taking the Under 18’s to the play offs in only their second season together as a team. He has introduced 20 new players to competitive ice hockey through the new ‘Learn to Play’ programme as well as finding more than 200 hours to complete his level 3 coaching course.
Karen Cresswell – Netball
Karen combines coaching with a wholehearted commitment to her own development as a coach. Working at club, district, and county level, she also works hard to motivate other coaches within the club. She coaches at club training twice a week with 4 to 15 year olds as well as Undertaking adult coaching such as ‘Back to Netball’ training. She works with the satellite academy, county academy, and regional talent academy and has been accepted on to the Nottinghamshire Talented Coaches Scheme to further enhance her coaching.
Jenny Harwood – Cycling
Jenny has worked all year in all weathers to coach and support the Go Ride section of the Nottingham Clarion club. Now a level 2 coach, she has built up the membership base to a core of about 40 riders. She has also developed session and coaching plans for the project which have contributed to the club attaining accreditation. This work has enabled a further 20 riders from neighbouring clubs to attend indoor training sessions, and take WATT bikes on the road. Jenny also coaches the younger section of the club to compete in the cyclo cross league.
Coach of the Year – Performance
Jamie Main – Swimming
Jamie was selected as coach for the Great Britain Junior Team at the European Championships where he coached five swimmers to multiple finals and medals. In August, he coached multiple medallists at the National Youth Championships as well as managing Nova to winning Top Girls Age Group Club at the Nationals. He head coached the English Talent Regional Squad in 2009-10 and is now an English National Talent Coach. Jamie also coached Jess Sylvester European and Commonwealth silver medals and assisted the 3 other Nova swimmers selected for the Commonwealth Games Team.
Bill Furniss – Swimming
A challenging year for Bill saw continued success with double Olympic Champion Rebecca Adlington. This season he coached her to the Barcelona 800m freestyle Mare Nostrum title in Barcelona in the fastest time of the year. In August he steered her to gold in the 400m freestyle at the European Championships and then the pair capped the season off with 400m and 800m freestyle gold medals and 2 bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games. Bill is also coach to Sasha Matthews who won bronze at the Commonwealth Games and Kathryn Wyld who was also selected for Delhi.
Leigh Archer –Triathlon
Leigh Archer has coached a team of Nottingham based Triathletes to both national and international titles as well as achieving world class accolades. Peter Lynas took a silver medal at the European Triathlon Championships, as did Julie Lambourne as well as a bronze at the National Duathlon Championships. Leigh’s biggest success is with Nottingham Doctor Lucy Gossage, who claimed 3rd at the European Ironman Championships and the followed this up at the World Ironman Championships as first British age group woman. This level of success is a considerable achievement for a coach of only 4 years.
Disabled Sportsperson of the Year
David Phillipson - Wheelchair Tennis
David’s season on the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Tour has seen him, reach the quarter-finals at three of four Super Series tournaments. These are the top tournaments after Grand Slams. He was also a member of the Great Britain team that finished fourth in World Group 1 at the World Team in May – the best Great Britain result since 2002. David reached his career best men's singles world ranking of 11 in August after winning the Ath Open in Belgium and he won the men's doubles title at the Nottingham Indoor in October, ensuring his qualification for a debut appearance at the Camozzi Doubles Masters in November.
Jonathon Broome – Kayaking
Selected to join the GB Paracanoeing squad earlier this year, August saw Jonathon’s 20 year wait for accolades was finally over as he took bronze in the K1 200 metre A class at the World Sprint Championships in Poznan. He recorded a personal best time. He also won the Men’s C trophy at the Paddle-Ability National Sprint Championships at Holme Pierrepont in September with a gold in the Men’s C 200 metres and a doubles silver in the K2 500 metre race, and bronze at 200 metres.
Charlotte Henshaw - Swimming
This year, Charlotte has continued her dominance of the pool in the 100m SB6 breaststroke event. In May, she defended her title at the BT Paralympic World Cup, taking the gold medal in a new world record time. She broke this record in qualifying at the IPC World Championships in August, but had to settle for the silver medal in the final alongside a new European record of 1.38.46 seconds.
Junior Coach of the Year
Rosanne Pepper – Netball
Working with Newark Shooters Netball Club, Rosanne supports younger players. She demonstrates an enthusiastic and committed approach to assisting with coaching and playing netball. She assists with the School High 5 team, and coaches the Under 12, and 13 teams, as well as assisting at tournaments. Rosie helps with preparation of sessions and equipment and always stays to help tidy up at the end of training. Now inspiring younger members to follow in her footsteps, she is part of Newark’s VISPA programme and has quickly achieved the highest award for number of voluntary hours.
Daniel Yates – Football
Hucknall Sports Soccer School wanted to recognise Daniel’s role as assistant manager. He has supported over 40 children attending Sunday morning sessions. Highly punctual, he would be setting up goals and marking pitches with cones well before other members of staff arrived. This was on top of meticulous session planning. Daniel has a FA Level One coaching qualification and is working on his level two. His excellent rapport with children is complimented by a wide knowledge of suitable drills. Daniel recently moved from Hucknall Sports to take up a paid coaching position with a local agency and the club wishes him every success.
Tom Ballantine – Basketball
A former Nova Centurion player, and joining the Nottingham Hoods Basketball Club at the age of 17, Tom wanted to share his skills with other young people while improving his knowledge and Understanding of the game. He took his level 1 coaching course and now volunteers as an assistant coach, looking after junior players. Tom is always early for training, setting up a positive environment for young players to learn. He is a great young role model and he demonstrates excellent basketball and communication skills. Tom is also a level 1 referee so is also supporting the sport as an official alongside finding time to play.
Junior Disabled Sportsperson of the Year
Andrew Zawadzki – Swimming
Last August, Andrew competed at the British Learning Disability Nationals and broke the 50m backstroke British and European Records in his S14 classification group. He competed well at the DSE Junior National Championships where he was the winner of 7 gold medals, and 1 silver. He is now ranked first in 7 S14 category events nationally. His times at the junior nationals qualified him for the British Swimming S14 Fast Track Programme which points athletes towards competing at the Paralympic Games. Andrew was also selected to represent Great Britain at the German Open in June 2010.
Karl Hassell - Wheelchair Basketball and Para-canoeing
Although only 14, Karl is a national champion in two sports. In April, his Jaguars Under 15 Wheelchair Basketball team won the Under 15 National Championships where was top scorer. He was also the captain of the East Midlands Under 15's team that won the Lord Taverners National Championships in October, once again being top scorer in every game. Karl trains three times a week, working hard to improve his personal fitness and team skills. In Paracanoeing, he is the winner of the Junior Men's Timeband B Trophy at the Paddle-Ability National Championships, taking three gold medals, each in personal best times.
Oliver Pratley – Swimming
16 year old Oliver has only been swimming for 4 years. At the European Downs Championships in April, he broke two junior world short course records in the 100 metres freestyle and 50 metres backstroke events. He was then selected to swim for Great Britain at the Downs Syndrome World Swimming Championships in Taiwan. Here, he won gold in the 100m backstroke, and freestyle events; both in world record times. He was first swimmer in 4x200m freestyle relay and broke the junior world record and won a further gold, 2 silvers, and 1 bronze in other events. Oliver also holds 5 Junior European records.
Junior Sportsperson of the Year
Fiona Donnelly – Swimming
In July, Fiona came away from the European Junior Swimming Championships in Helsinki with a silver medal in the 4x200m freestyle relay. She was also a finalist in the 400m freestyle event. She holds Scottish Age Group long course records for 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle and short course records for 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke.
Jake Saywell – Showjumping
In July, Jake took part in the European Children’s Championship, winning a team gold medal and placing 4th individually. He placed in all three classes at the Children’s Nations Cup in May and was third in the Children on Horses class as the British Showjumping SCOPE Festival in August. He won the South View Equestrian Centre 1.20m Open Class competition in May alongside numerous successes at other national competitions.
Sam Oldham - Men's Artistic Gymnastics
At the Singapore Youth Olympics in August, Sam came away as overall champion, and horizontal bar gold medallist with silver in the pommel horse competition. At the European Junior Championships in Birmingham in April he was the all round gold medallist and champion as well as taking a team gold medal. British champion at Under 16 and Under 18 level, Sam won the latter with a good enough score to win the senior title. He was also part of the senior team at the World Championships in October.
Rosie Rudin – Swimming
Rosie won five gold and three silver medals at the British Gas National Age Group Championships in August where she was awarded the trophy for the most outstanding swimmer for her age group. She won 7 gold medals and 1 silver at the regional age group championships in June and became the overall champion for her age group. During the year has been ranked number one nationally for her age in nine different events. She currently holds no less than 46 individual Calverton and Bingham Swimming Club records and is still only just 12 years old.
Katie Helen Bartlett – Rowing
At August’s Junior European Championships, Katie came away with 2 silver medals in the women’s 8 and women’s quad events. She added this to gold in the Junior 18 Double Sculls at the Women’s Henley Regatta in July. She was part of the British National Rowing Championships gold medal winning quadruple sculls and rowing 8 sides and won gold at the National Schools Championships in the Under 16 quad with a bronze in the Under 17 single scull.
Jack Burrows - speed skating
Jack is now ranked second in Europe after winning the 333m at the season’s Opening Games in Belgium in October. Prior to this he won events at the Easter Cup in Ghent, the British Junior Open Championships, and British National Championships. He is gold standard for his age category and is in the British Development Squad. Last season he ranked 26th in Europe for 500m, and 8th in Europe for 333m. The new season is looking very promising.

Paviors RFC: Girls Under 15 Team - Rugby Union
Winners of the NLD League for the second time, undefeated and scoring 157 points with only 5 against, the team also beat a Premiership Ladies side to become Midlands Champions and defeated hot favourites London Irish for the RFU Women’s National Cup U15's Champions title. 12 players were selected to represent the three Counties, 6 girls were selected for the Midlands East Regional Squad, and 2 girls attended the RFUW National U18's High Performance Academy.
Beeston Hockey Club U16 Boys Team– Hockey
The team came fifth at the National Indoor Finals with only one defeat. The outdoor season saw them undefeated. At the National Finals weekend they needed a victory by at least 2 clear goals to win the National Title. Beeston started the game brilliantly with 2 goals in the first 2 minutes of the match, eventually winning 4-1 to be crowned National Champions - an outstanding achievement from an outstanding group of boys.
Jaguars Wheelchair Basketball Under 15's Team - Wheelchair Basketball
The Jaguars can boast a whole season unbeaten, taking on sides from all over the country, and winning the northern section of the National League. Their finals weekend saw them contest a nail biting final against the favourites from Belfast where they came out victors by a single point, giving them the title of Great Britain National Under 15 Champions. With the exception of just one player, the team will be young enough to defend the title in 2011.
Junior Volunteer of the Year
Victoria Freer – Swimming
Vicky volunteers at Bingham Penguins Swimming Club, supporting both child and adult swimmers with disabilities. Initially working with one child in the pool, she agreed to volunteer more time to work with an adult swimmer when the club became short of volunteer support. Out of the water, Vicki has supported the club as a photographer for the awards night, and has mentored new volunteers during their first sessions, sharing ideas she has used to build confidence in the water. Vicky has also managed to recruit 3 new volunteers to support the club.
Jodie Cherrill-Burroughs - Cheerleading, trampolining, and dance
A level 1 leader in both sports and dance at The Grove School, Jodie has assisted with community events including the Community Dance Day, and the Balderton Boccia Bonanza. She has joined Newark’s VISPA volunteering scheme and has since volunteered at the Newark Half Marathon, the Magnus Disability Sports Day, and has begun a regular Tuesday evening placement as an assistant trampoline instructor at the Grove Leisure Centre. Jodie has devoted over 50 hours to setting up and running an after school cheerleading club which attracts 40 students per session and was responsible for organising a cheerleading display at a recent Change for Life event.
Sarah Wood – Basketball
Sarah is a trained statistician and now trains and mentors others. She is currently enrolled on a level 3 table officials course and volunteered as an elite level statistician at the World Wheelchair Basketball Championships in July. Also a level one coach, Sarah assists in junior training sessions in primary schools and then gave over 30 hours supporting the Mansfield Primary School Finals as a table official and competitions manager. Invaluable to the Mansfield Giants, she performs other tasks on match days besides statistician, selling entry and raffle tickets, and helping to set up and clear away the court and equipment.
Roll of Honour
Mike Sheriston – Squash
Mike Sheriston, the chair of Nottinghamshire Squash, has served his sport for almost 25 years. On a playing level, Mike is responsible for appointing captains for each age-group, and coordinates fixtures and venues with the national governing body, devoting many hundreds of hours to organising squash which he juggles with hectic family, and professional lives. He also attends many prize-givings, provides press interviews, and represents the county at many regional and national meetings organised by the national governing body, liaising closely with sports officers across the county. As a result of Mike’s work, over 650 squash players take part in weekly team matches and squash is played regularly by over 1,000 people in the county.
Paula Coleman – Hockey
Actively involved as a player and a volunteer, Paula has been with Meridian Ladies Hockey Club for over 40 years. Over the years she has been secretary, treasurer, and umpire for the club and has threatened retirement from playing on many occasions, but has come out of it to fill in as goalkeeper and even outfield to ensure Meridian has a team. She has even helped paint the lines on the grass to mark out the pitch! She is now the team manager and the club would not be where it is today had it not been for Paula’s dedication to the club and the sport.
Stuart Cooper – Gymnastics
Stuart Cooper has been involved with Ashfield Gymnastics Club since 1977 when his daughter took up the sport. Over the last 35 years he has helped produce many gymnasts and coaches, not just in the Ashfield area, but countywide. He ran the county squad in the late 80’s and 90’s and has produced 10 regional champions who have gone to national finals. Stuart has also mentored and inspired a large number of level 1, 2, and 3 coaches at the club and still continues to do so. He still coaching over 9 hours a week and continues to aim to bring out the best in everyone he works with.
Sportsperson of the Year
Rebecca Adlington - Swimming
In June, Rebecca set the fastest 800m freestyle time of the year at the Mare Nostrum series in Barcelona. She followed this in August with a gold, and a bronze medal at the European Championships in Budapest, winning the 400m freestyle event and being part of the third placed 4x200m relay team. An excellent season climaxed in October at the Commonwealth Games where she came away with gold medals in the 400m, and 800m freestyle events as well as taking bronze medals in the 200m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle competitions.
Alastair Wilson and Adam Dixon – Hockey
Alastair and Adam from Beeston Hockey Club have had an exceptional year at both club and international level. They were key members of the first ever England hockey side to win the gold medal at the European Championships and also represented England at the World Championship Trophy finishing fourth. Silver medallists at the world cup, losing only to Australia in the final, they also played for Great Britain in the 4 Nations Championship, which was part of the Women’s Championship Trophy held in Nottingham. At club level they were part of Beeston’s first team which won the England Hockey Cup, and reached the last 16 of the European Hockey League.
Lee Westwood – Golf
Westwood capped a superb 2010 by becoming the world's number one golfer at the end of October. In doing so, the Nottinghamshire player ended Tiger Woods' 281 week stay at the top of the rankings. He is the first European to top the world rankings since Nick Faldo in 1994. This was just reward for a season that included runner-up finishes at The Masters and the Open and a victory on the US Tour in the St. Jude Classic. It wasn't just individual successes. At the Ryder Cup, the Worksop golfer led from the front, taking two-and-a-half points from of a possible four to make a telling contribution to Europe's eventual triumph over the United States.
Team of the Year
Beeston Hockey Club Men’s First Team – Hockey
The team finished their season as runners up the National Premier League, and winners of the Hockey Association Cup for the second time in three years when they beat Hampstead and Westminster Hockey Club 2-1 in the final. As a consequence of their performance the previous year, Beeston also qualified to play in the European Hockey League. Following 2 victories in the group stage against French, and Belgian opposition they were eliminated in the final 16 stage, losing 3-1 to the Belgian side they had previously beaten. Beeston Hockey Club is now considered one of the top 3 teams in Britain.
Birchall Brothers Sidecar Team - Sidecar Racing (Motorsport)
Defending their world title of last year, Ben and Tom Birchall rounded off an eventful racing season by taking three pole positions, four wins and two lap records in their final three outings on the Formula 1 Sidecar calendar. This resulted in a world championship third place and the runner up spot in the Battle of Britain championship. These were remarkable results following a major setback in Croatia when they crashed during practice for the world championship, leaving Ben with a painful back injury. He bravely managed to continue the season, missing just one round of the Battle of Britain championship while he was in hospital for skin grafts.
Nottingham Hoods Senior Men's Basketball Team – Basketball
This team developed from a group of casual players who met in a local league and wanted a greater challenge. They finished their inaugural season as runners up in Division 4. They then became play off champions after beating the best teams in the North, and South divisions and beating league rivals Birmingham Mets in the finals. This result ensured their promotion to Division 3 of the National League at the first time of asking. To cap it all, they were also winners of the Sherwood League Men’s Summer League, the competition where their journey began.
Volunteer of the Year
Robert Clegg - Football
Under Rob’s leadership, Keyworth Football Club is a thriving community resource. As Chairman, he led work for the annual reassessment of their FA Charter Standard Community Club award and also been instrumental in the production of the club’s new five year football development plan, aiming to increase participation as well as developing more coaches and referees. Rob’s greatest achievement this year saw his volunteering hours increased to almost full time as he oversaw the building of a new club house and changing facilities after securing £765,000 of funding to make the project a reality.
Caroline Towndrow - Rugby Union
Volunteering for West Bridgford Rugby Club, Caroline has organised a programme with 10 local schools to encourage more players. She has recruited a team of local coach’s and is working on a programme to provide teachers with skills to develop the game further in their local school. This, alongside the fun events she has organised to engage the young players at the club have resulted in many more junior players. As club promotional officer, she has developed an information pack for new members and campaigns to encourage more people to come along and watch local rugby. Caroline also coaches one of the junior sides.
Jane Kemp – Hockey and tennis
Jane is currently chairman and volunteer co-ordinator at Southwell Brincliffe United Hockey Club where she also set up the junior section. She never misses a Saturday game or Wednesday training and attends every session to coach, organise, collect subs, and generally support the juniors with their development. She attends all meetings and makes a huge contribution to fund raising and social events. This year she was responsible for the club gaining ClubsFirst accreditation in record time. Jane is also treasurer for Farnsfield Tennis Club, helping them gain their Clubmark accreditation in summer 2010. Here again, she is active in organising fund raising and social events.
Breakthrough of the Year
Matt Bolton – Fencing
This 13 year old West Bridgford fencer has recently qualified for the England Under 15 Epee Squad. In March, he will travel to Wroclaw in Poland to compete in the 34th Challenge Wratislavia competition. Attracting more than 1,700 competitors from 27 countries, this is a key competition for young fencers in Europe, Asia, and North Africa. This achievement caps off a season in which Matt won the Leon Paul Junior U15 Epee Series and achieved top-eight finishing positions in two Elite Epee Under 16 ranking tournaments. He has also gained a senior ranking of 233, higher than any other fencer of Matt's age group.
Sophie Chatel – Taekwondo
A member of the Carlton Arena Taekwondo at the Great Britain Poomsae Squad, Sophie won gold medals at the Finland Open, and the Scotland Open, and was a finalist at the European Championships in Portugal. She won gold at the 2010 National Poomsae Championships as part of the 1st female team, bronze as an individual, and a silver medal in the pairs competition. She also took part in the World Championships in Uzbekistan in October. Sophie is now UK number 1 for the 1st female team, and has jumped from being unranked to the overall UK number 3 individual spot in the past 12 months.
Amy Humphreys - Table Tennis
Competing at Under 13 level, Amy has a current England ranking of 6, she is 29th for cadets which is Under 15, and 83rd for juniors at Under 18. She is the number 1 player in the Cadet League Squad in Division 3 where she was part of the group winning side and has been picked to represent Nottinghamshire at County Cadets level. She also won the East Midlands U12 Girls Championship. These are astonishing achievements when considering Amy has only been playing competitive table tennis for one year in a season where she has amassed 360 ranking points. She is now aiming to break into the top 5 and achieve England selection.
