When You Wish Upon a Star

Cerebral Palsy (CP) Sport is the sports organisation for people with cerebral palsy, providing opportunities to individuals of all ages and at all levels - from the recreational, right through to Paralympic competition. It is also an advisory agency for disability sport issues and is recognised and respected within the international arena. It was a founder member of the British Paralympic Association and is also a member of CP ISRA, the international sports organisation for people with cerebral palsy, which in turn was a founder member of the International Paralympic Committee.

C P Sport is not just about elite sport. Many members see CP Sport as an extension of their family. They attend squad weekends to socialise and talk to people who share the same problems and fears as they do, people who they can identify and feel comfortable with. The charity also provides a support network for parents and siblings who have the opportunity to share information with people who understand their difficulties.

CP Sport does not receive any Government or Big Lottery Funding and so relies on the kindness of individuals in the community to help it make a real difference to the lives of children and adults with disabilities. The charity is delighted to be involved in the Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride and wishes all the participants an enjoyable day.

The Geoff Thomas Foundation is committed to the development and delivery of new treatments for patients with leukaemia and other blood cancers across the country.

The advances in medical science, which made Geoff's bone marrow transplant possible, have offered him a realistic hope of a cure.  Sadly however for many people with leukaemia effective treatments still do not exist.  However the remarkable scientific advances which have been made in the last few years in understanding why leukaemia and other blood cancers develop has now given the medical teams the information they need to design new drug transplants and therapies.

Progress will only be made however if doctors and scientists across the country can be given the resources they need to work collectively to develop and deliver these new treatments.

We have therefore brought together the five leading consultants at top centres in Birmingham, London (Barts), Manchester, Nottingham and Oxford in order to identify what they need to make real progress in finding a cure for this terrible disease.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is delighted to have been chosen as one of the charities to benefit from the Great Nottinghamshire Bike Ride and we hope everyone has an enjoyable day.

Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free to give terminally ill people the choice of dying at home supported by their families.

A Marie Curie Nurse provides specific care, such as giving medications and treatments and monitoring their effectiveness. Because the Marie Curie Nurse is in the home for several hours at a time, she can give the patient’s regular carer (usually family members) the chance to take a break from caring to rest, go shopping, keep in touch with the outside world, or simply get a good night’s sleep. Carers also benefit from the opportunity to discuss their worries and fears with someone who has time to listen.

This service is provided free of charge, 365 days of the year and 24 hours a day. A Marie Curie Nurse is requested into a patient’s home via the District Nurse or a GP referral. Marie Curie Nurses tend to be requested at the latter stage of the cancer journey.

Rainbows is the children’s hospice for the East Midlands and cares for children between the ages of 0 and 19 who have sadly been diagnosed with a life-limiting condition.

Whilst offering respite, palliative and terminal care for children. Rainbows also offers support to the whole family and in particular brothers and sisters who have to cope with the distress of witnessing the deterioration of a much loved family member.

Rainbows receives no direct government funding and every year have to raise in excess of £2 million just to keep the doors open to the children and their families who come to stay.

Sadly the need for Rainbows will never disappear but happily with help such as yours we will be there to meet this need.

This year sees the launch of a major appeal ‘Building for the Future’. The appeal will raise money to redesign the current hospice facilities to allow young people over the age of 18, to also use the hospice facilities at the same time as the children which currently isn’t possible.

This appeal is so important and will benefit all the children, young people and families in the care of the hospice. The improved facilities will help current hospice services expand further to meet the needs of these very special people.

You Too Can Make A Dream Come True

All over the UK children are bravely suffering from life threatening illnesses and many of them have just one wish. These wishes are varied, often expensive and many families are not able to afford to make these wishes come true. However, with the help of our supporters of When You Wish Upon A Star, over 10 000 wishes have already been granted.

Making wishes come true is not only beneficial to the poorly child, but also to the parents, as they see their child’s tears transformed into laughter and frowns turned upside down. The charity feels that it is of the utmost importance to involve the parents and siblings in the special day of the very special child.
