Commonwealth Citizens' Association poster, 1960s
Reference: DD/CR/54/4
The Commonwealth Citizens' Association was part of the Community Relations Council. The Council aimed to support and help new arrivals coming to Nottingham from Commonwealth countries, beginning in the 1950s. The Council also encouraged mutual understanding and tolerance between the indigenous population of Nottingham and the newcomers.
This poster promotes a dance presented by the Commonwealth Citizens' Association, in cooperation with the Nottingham District Cripples' Guild. The dance was held at the Sherwood Rooms in Nottingham in the mid 1960s. The headline act was Millie.
Millie, born Millicent Small in 1946 in Jamaica, had a smash hit with 'My Boy Lollipop', which reached No 2 in both the US and UK charts in 1964.
The poster features in our brand new online exhibition, Nottinghamshire's African Caribbean Heritage. Follow this link to explore this new online exhibition.
