Guild Roll of Nottingham, 1371

Guild Roll of Nottingham, 1371

Reference: DP 90/1

A guild was a type of organisation that existed in mediaeval times. Its members would have provided mutual help at difficult times, for instance in case of death or fires in homes, as well as education and the maintenance of religious services and observances. The souls of deceased members were remembered regularly at services.

This document lists the members of the Guild of St Mary and is the earliest known record of a religious guild in Nottingham. There are 209 members listed on the roll. Many of the individuals are women, both as wives of members and in their own right. Among the members are several mayors of the period, a few bailiffs and the schoolmaster William de Adbolton. Some individuals are identified by their occupations, such as John Crich, smith, and Roger Pervis, butcher.

The document has been purchased by Nottinghamshire Archives with support from grants from the Museums Libraries and Archives/Victoria and Albert Purchase Grant Fund and the Friends of the National Libraries. The roll is of outstanding significance for the study of the mediaeval borough of Nottingham.
