Admissions register of the Bentinck School, Nottingham, 1938 - 1939

School admission registers record all the pupils beginning their education at a particular school. The information recorded in an admission register can include the date of admission, the child's name, the name and address of the child's parents or guardian, birth date, and which school the child was previously attending. They can also record where the child went after leaving the school.

This example shows a page from the girls' department of the Bentinck School in Nottingham. Three of the girls came to the school from Liverpool in December 1938 for a period of two weeks, and another ten from London for one week. These girls were the daughters of pantomime artists who were visiting Nottingham during the festive season. Just before Christmas the artists moved on to their next venue in Skegness, and their daughters went with them.

On a more sombre note, eleven girls arrived at the school in January and early February 1939. These girls were all from Vienna, in German-occupied Austria, and are described as refugees, unable to speak English. Fleeing from Nazi oppression, they stayed at the school for either a few months or until 1941 or 1942.
