Walking into History: the Story of Jack Helyer, Cinema Organist, Radio Personality and Rambler

Speaker: Chris Weir

Jack Helyer established a national reputation as a cinema organist playing regularly at the Ritz (later the Odeon) in Nottingham. He also performed on national radio and on organs all over the country in the 1940s and 50s. His signature tune 'I'm Happy When I'm Hiking' became popular with all his audiences. Jack loved rambling and wrote two successful walking books, one on Derbyshire and another on Nottinghamshire. Chris Weir recalls Jack's story and brings these remarkable years back to life.

Sport in Nottinghamshire has a fascinating heritage. Once largely the preserve of the landowning and wealthy classes, sport increasingly became an important part of life for rich and poor alike. In this prospect of sporting 'plenty', Michael Austin dips into the worlds of angling, archery, cricket, boxing and lots more. We will also hear about several sporting characters along the way!

The historic market town of Newark has a musical heritage dating back hundreds of years. At the centre of this tradition stands the parish church with its choir school, a pre-Reformation foundation. Brenda Pask explores the school's history, the history of the church organ, the bells, the angelic musicians depicted in the stained glass and carvings, and other fascinating aspects of Newark's fine musical tradition.

Dream Palaces: the History of Nottinghamshire Cinema

Peter Lester uses a whole range of contemporary documents to evoke the Golden Age of local cinema. His talk takes us back to the era of the Elite and the Hippodrome, exploring architectural and cultural highlights. So just sit back and relax as the lights dim and the curtains draw back…
