Main groups of documents include:
Title deeds
Coverage: 12th - 20th centuries
Documents recording the purchase and sale of land and buildings on them. Title deeds relating to the current owner will usually be held by their solicitor or mortgage lender. Many recent transactions can be traced through the Land Registry.
Wills
Coverage: 18th - 19th centuries, some earlier
Documents recording inheritance.
How to find the document you want
Each solicitors' collection has its own catalogue in the archive search room. There are also person's and place name indexes in the search room to help you find which collection you need, especially if you do not know which solicitor will have held the documents you are looking for.
