Nottinghamshire Archives holds a small collection of Inland Revenue records. The main groups of records relate to the valuation of land undertaken by the Inland Revenue as part of the Finance Act (1910), and can be used for tracing the owners of land at that time.

Main groups of documents include:

Valuation books

Coverage: 1910
Series of books detailing how much individual plots of land were worth and who owned and occupied them in 1910.

Each volume was compiled by a Land Valuation Officer and relates to a particular parish or group of parishes. The books record basic details of the property, the names of the owner and occupier, and details of how much the property was worth and exemptions to tax, such as rights of way across the property.

Each property is identified by an assessment number. Plans were drawn up showing which number relates to which property.

Valuation Officers also compiled Field Books, which give fuller details than those provided in the Valuation Books. These are held at The National Archives.

Valuation plans

Coverage: 1910
Series of plans identifying properties and plots of land with a number. Each number on the plan relates to an entry in the valuation books detailing who owned the land and how much it was worth.

Valuation plans are based on Ordnance Survey Maps, principally at a scale of 1:2500. Not all plans for the county survive so properties in some parts of the county cannot be matched directly to entries in the valuation books.

Land tax returns

Coverage: 1838 - 1949
Lists of owners and occupiers of land. There are returns for individual parishes throughout Nottinghamshire for varying dates. Earlier returns are part of the Courts archive group.
