School board records

Coverage: 1870 - 1902
Education throughout Nottinghamshire was usually provided by the County, City or relevant District Council. However, some parts of the county were governed by individual school boards. The records of these boards comprise largely administrative and financial records, such as minute books, reports, ledgers and accounts.

Log books

Reference: S/L
Coverage: from c 1870
Log books were compiled by the school's head teacher on a daily basis, and record the daily running of the school: a school diary. They include details of the school curriculum, attendance trends and activities, but very little on individual pupils.

Registers of all pupils admitted to a school. They include names of pupils, dates of birth, name of parent, address and date of admission and departure.

Other records of individual schools

Reference: S/BX
Coverage: 18th - 20th centuries
This category comprises all other types of documents relating to a particular school other than the admissions registers and the log books. This can range in variety from governors' meetings minute books and headmasters' reports to class photographs and pupil publications.

How to find the document you want

There are separate catalogues in the archives search room for school admissions registers (S/A), school log books (S/L), and other school records (S/BX). The records are arranged according to the school they relate to.

There is a separate catalogue in the search room for records of school boards (S/B). Records of other education authorities can be found in the lists of the relevant organisation: County Council (CC), Nottingham Borough (CA), Mansfield Borough (DC/M), Newark Borough (DC/NK), Retford Borough (DC/R) and Southwell Diocese (DR).

Photographs, maps and plans can also be accessed through the photographs index and the maps and plans index, available in the search room.
