Maps and Plans
Nottinghamshire Archives holds a large variety of maps and plans recording a different variety of information. The range extends from early manuscript maps of estates and engraved county maps to modern building plans.
There is a maps and plans index in the archives search room arranged alphabetically by place. In addition, some maps and plans appear in the catalogue of the collection to which they belong. Enclosures, tithes and Ordnance Survey are Archive Groups in their own right, and have their own catalogues and indexes. Find out more below.
Maps and Plans
Building Control Plans
Coverage: 1875 - 1974 Building Control Plans were approved either by the City Council or a District Council, depending upon locality of the building.

County maps
Coverage: 16th century - 19th century These are some of the earliest maps held at the Archives and usually depict the entire county. The earliest, including Christopher Saxton's 1576 map, are often decorative and inaccurate. Later maps became more detailed and increased in accuracy. Additionally there are a small number of road maps in the style pioneered by Ogilby in 1675, which take the form a series of long strips following the route of a particular road.
These maps can be accessed only through the Maps and Plans Index. There is a separate index of map makers.

Deposited plans of public undertakings
Coverage: 19th century These include proposed routes for roads, railways, bridges and canals

Enclosure Awards
Reference: EA Coverage: 18th century - 19th century

Estate maps
Coverage: 16th century - 19th century These maps can be accessed either through the Maps and Plans Index or through the relevant family collection catalogue

Goad Insurance plans
Reference: DD/GOAD Coverage: 1886 - 1962

Ordnance Survey maps
Reference: OS Coverage: c 1830 - c 1940

Tithe Awards
Reference: AT Coverage: 1836 - c 1850

Valuation maps
Coverage: 1910
