Child cycle training

Cycle training is normally delivered through schools throughout the County and is free of charge. The course has received provisional National Accreditation and training is currently provided at two Levels. Groups should be a minimum of 10 pupils, maximum 12 pupils.

Level 1

This is available to pupils in Years 5 & 6. The training is carried out off-road and aims to provide the client with the necessary skills and understanding to undertake a trip in a traffic free environment.

The course is usually 2 x 1 hour lessons and is delivered on a playground or similar area.  A third 1 hour lesson can be added if the group are not progressing on to Level 2 training.

Level 2

This is available to pupils aged 10 years plus or to Year 5 pupils in the summer term only.  Trainees should have completed a Level 1 course before progressing to Level 2. The training is carried out on-road and aims to provide the client with the skills and understanding to be able to undertake a trip to school, work or leisure on quiet roads.

The course comprises of 4 x 1.5 hour lessons.

All pupils who take part in training must provide their own bike which should be appropriate for the activity. Further guidance is available on our ‘Bike Check’ page.  A suitable and correctly fitted cycle helmet should be worn when taking part in our training – for further guidance see our page on cycle helmets.
