Home Education

The Home Education Service

Is your child unable to go to school because he or she is unwell?
Is your child likely to be away from school for more than 15 working days?

If you have answered yes to these questions, it is important to make sure your child does not miss out on their education. To meet the requirements of Section 19 of the Education Act 1996, the statutory guidance ‘Access to Education for Children and Young People with Medical Needs’ 2001 and ‘Guidance on the Education of School Age Parents’ 2001, the County Council has a duty to provide education otherwise than at school where it is necessary to do so to meet pupils’ needs.

The Home Education Service is part of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Children and Young People's Services department.

Within the Division the Home Education Service provides education to physically sick pupils, pregnant pupils, school age mothers and some pupils referred for anxiety related reasons who are temporarily unable to attend their schools.Home Education may be provided for any pupil who lives in Nottinghamshire and who:

Due to a physical illness:

  • Is expected to be absent from school for reasons of ill health for a period of time exceeding 15 school days and who is deemed well enough to benefit from structured educational input.
  • Has received education in hospital and is expected on discharge from hospital to be absent from school for a further period of time exceeding 15 school days.
  • Has a medical referral supported by recommendation from a Consultant or Community Paediatrician in accordance with the authority’s policy for Home Education.

Is pregnant:

  • And has reached the 28th week of pregnancy
  • Or before the 28th week and has additional health needs according to the advice of health services.

In accordance with the DFES ‘Guidance on the Education of School Age Parents’ October 2001, ‘A pupil who becomes pregnant is entitled to no more than 18 calendar weeks authorised absence to cover the time immediately before and after the birth of the child. If the young woman is absent from school with a pregnancy or postnatal related illness, the ‘Access to Education 2001 Guidance on the Education of Children and Young People’ applies.

Provision may also be available for pupils with anxiety related problems to support their reintegration to school.

The Head Teacher or a designated member of the teaching staff should be responsible for making the referral for Home Education, unless the pupil’s absence from school is preceded by education in QMC, City, Kings Mill or Bassetlaw hospitals.

The main role of the Home Tutor is to provide a relevant and appropriate differentiated curriculum consistent with the National Curriculum as advised by the pupil’s school. This will help in ensuring continuity and supporting a successful return to school.
