Support for ethnic minority children
In Nottinghamshire we are committed to helping our schools meet any additional needs of black and bilingual pupils, as well as children from Traveller communities.
We employ a number of teachers and other staff with special skills who are able to provide schools with advice and support to help black and bilingual pupils get the most out of their education. This includes help for pupils for whom English is not their home or first language. Schools are able to give advice on how to contact these services or they can be contacted on tel: 0115 854 6026 or email: sarah.lee@nottscc.gov.uk
Nottinghamshire Local Authority, through the Nottinghamshire Traveller Education Service, is also committed to the provision of appropriate educational opportunity for all Traveller children residing in the county, whether temporarily or permanently.
We aim to do this by facilitating access, promoting attendance, improving the achievement of Traveller children and raising awareness of Traveller culture.
This may be achieved by direct pupil support, embedding good practice, advising and training mainstream teachers and liaison with other services.
We liaise with Traveller education services across the country and are able to offer advice to other agencies and educational establishments regarding the educational needs of Travellers.
Further details can be obtained direct from the service on tel: 01636 680380 or via e-mail: tes.team@nottscc.gov.uk
