Help with transport costs

Most children within Nottinghamshire live within walking distance of the school they attend. The legal walking distance is:

  • Up to two miles - for children up to eight years old
  • Up to three miles - for children over eight years old.

Walking distance is measured using the shortest available walking route for a pupil. This is not necessarily the same route as by car because footpaths or paved areas may form part of the route. To ensure your child's safety they may need someone to accompany them on their journey and this would be your responsibility.

If you live outside the legal walking distance from the school your child attends please refer to details on under 16's travel assistance.

The travel assistance scheme is managed by the public transport section of the Communities department and is split into two parts, under 16 travel and over 16 travel. Assistance for pupils with special transport needs is also available within their catchment area.

If your circumstances do not fit any of those mentioned it may still be possible for your child to be considered for travel assistance to school. Further information can be obtained by downloading the booklet 'Under 16 travel assistance scheme 2002/2003'.
