Education Library Service refurbishment

Phase 1 of our major refurbishment programme is now completed and we are fully open.

The downstairs area has been fully redecorated and carpeted, and new lighting has been installed.  The counter and main area of shelving remain in the same places, but we have taken the opportunity to rearrange our work areas, and provide a teachers' area with easy chairs and coffee and water machines.

Advance warning! Further refurbishment is scheduled to take place after half-term, when there will be a short period during which visitors will not be able to access the upstairs stock.  Exact dates will be announced in due course.

Buy books the easy way for your school library

ELS has now launched a new book purchase scheme for schools in association with Peters Bookselling Service of Birmingham, the largest specialist supplier of children’s books in the country.  Schools using the service will be able to order their library books online using Peters online catalogue, PetraNet.  PetraNet includes a review and an age category for each book. Most titles also show the jacket image and an excerpt from the text.

  • Ordering – you can order books online or ask ELS to place your order for you
  • Delivery – your order and invoice will be delivered direct to school
  • Discount – all books, with the exception of text books, will receive 20% discount
  • Servicing – for a small extra charge, books can be supplied serviced with a plastic jacket and classification number.

National Year of Reading

2008 is the National Year of Reading.  A decade after the first National Year of Reading in 1998, 2008 aims to put reading at the top of everyone’s agenda and to "make thousands who can't read able to read, and get thousands of those who can read to read more.”

Activities in the National Year of Reading will include the following themes:

April Read all about it!: links to newspapers and magazines; library membership campaign.
May Mind and body: reading and learning at work; the knock-on benefits of reading.
June Reading escapes: holiday and summer reads.
July Rhythm and rhyme: poems, poetry and lyrics.
August Read the game: the influence of sport and how this can help promote reading.
September You are what you read: cultural, personal and local identity.
October Word of mouth: storytelling, reading out loud, reading together, reading aloud, live literature.
November Screen reads: exploring the diversity of reading and writing; scripts, TV and films.
December Write the future: writing, texting, blogging etc.

ELS will be supporting the NYR by providing booktalks and storytelling in June and October and a range of booklists throughout the year.  If you wish to invite an author to your school, our Book Fairs Pack will help you.
