Background Information

QiSS stands for Quality in Study Support and is an award that schools work towards. There are 3 levels beginning with emerging, then moving onto Established and Advanced.

QiSS ...

'Raises achievement by enhancing the quality of learning outside the normal school day'

The aim of QiSS is to support schools, local authorities and other educational organisations in raising students' achievement, motivation and self esteem.

Study support is now seen as an initiative of proven effectiveness in raising standards of pupil attainment and increasing pupil motivation.

QiSS strongly believes that study support:

  • is a key part of strategies for school improvement;
  • raises pupil motivation, self-esteem and achievement;
  • promotes collaboration between schools and other organisations;
  • public libraries; youth services; the arts; sport; and business;
  • involves young people as decision makers, peer educators and evaluators of their own learning.

To gain the award you have to provide a portfolio of evidence. I am the study support co ordinator for our setting. We are now at established level, and are working towards Advanced. Only 2 schools in Nottinghamshire have achieved this so far.

If you require any help on putting a portfolio together or guidance please contact me.

The TA's named as peer support do so on the understanding that they are simply sharing their experiences rather than giving advice. For expert advice schools should contact the Local Authority Inclusion Support Service.
