Further Information on HLTA status
Higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) work in the school alongside the teacher, providing valuable support for teaching and learning activities. HLTAs work right across the curriculum, acting as a specialist assistant for a specific subject or department or helping to plan lessons and develop support materials.
Higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) status is aimed at reinforcing and improving staff's skills, allowing senior support staff working in the classroom to make an even more valuable contribution to improving standards in schools.
The HLTA programme is available to school support staff in England, who have sought the support of their headteacher and line manager.
There are several steps to achieving HLTA status:
- gaining support from your school
- completing Application and Self Review Form
- submitting application form for assessement and funding approval
- preparing for assessment - a short programme of support to help candidates prepare evidence for assessment against the standards
- assessment - an assessment of that evidence against the standards including a visit to the candidate’s school
- receiving the outcome
These steps will take you through the process of becoming an HLTA.
You should also refer to the ' Handbook for candidates' for more detailed information on the HLTA programme.
The professional standards for higher level teaching assistants (HLTAs) set out exactly what is expected of teaching assistants who are working towards HLTA status. The HLTA Standards were developed by the TDA following a wide-ranging consultation with headteachers, teachers, professional bodies, unions, employers and support staff.
