AST Salary
The LA has a limited amount of funding to support AST posts and there is always a high demand for it. Schools are advised to contact the AST Management Team to discuss whether or not any funding can be made available and what alternatives are possible of there is no funding left.
Where a school is supported to create a funded post, the school receives:
- an allocation to support the salary uplift to the AST spine
- a separate allocation to contribute to the outreach costs of the AST
The salary uplift allocation would be calculated form either M6 (for teachers already on Upper Pay Spine) or below (for early career teachers) to the AST salary starting point agreed for that AST.
The outreach allocation is currently in the region of £2000 per term. This allocation is used to facilitate AST release on a weekly basis, travelling and AST resource expenses.
AST Salary
ASTs are paid on a 5 point range from the AST spine. The pay spine is equivalent to the first 18 points of the leadership spine and remuneration is annual through performance management.
ASTs must be placed at an appropriate range on the spine to reflect the responsibilities within their post and the staffing structure of their school. There is no fixed Nottinghamshire AST salary. Each individual AST salary is agreed independently to take account of length of service, existing pay spine point and previous level of responsibility. The AST Management Team can support schools with this decision.

AST Contract and Job Description
