Peer supporters code of practice
This professional code of practice for head teacher peer supporters in Nottinghamshire has been synthesised and approved by a cross-phase working group of 15 serving Nottinghamshire head teachers and five LA officers.
A professional code of practice for peer supporters
1.The peer supporter and head teacher colleague should agree the ground rules for the support relationship at the first meeting, e.g.
- the location and timing of meetings
- the methods of communication preferred.
2.The peer supporter and head teacher colleague should agree the parameters for confidentiality of business on both sides, e.g.
- the content of dialogues
- any written notes made.
3.The peer supporter and head teacher colleague should recognise that there may be issues which arise where the peer supporter may not have the confidence to proceed and should at this point agree to access an independent referral point for additional support, e.g.
- health and safety issues
- legal concerns
- imbalance of support requirements.
4.The peer supporter and head teacher colleague should consider the support relationship to be voluntary on both sides. Either party should have the right to withdraw.
