Public Relations and Media

Work in these occupational areas varies from the ‘hands on’ work of the Printing Technician, through to the more strategic role of the Public Relations Officer.

Printing Technician
As a Printing Technician you would operate various printing, duplicating and finishing equipment in order to produce work of a high standard. Working within the Design, Publications and Print Division within the Resources Department, you would operate various/all equipment, compile all documentation relating to the progress of orders, clean and maintain machinery and work flexibly as part of a team. Your duties would include loading and unloading stock/finished jobs and ensuring paper was stored correctly. You would need to have served an Apprenticeship in the printing trade or have a City and Guilds Qualification in Printing or be working towards one. This course is available in many of the local Nottinghamshire colleges. Other essential requirements include previous experience of operating print finishing equipment (offset presses and high volume copiers). The post is career graded and progression is subject to meeting certain criteria.

Graphic Designer
As a Graphic Designer within the Design, Publications and Print Division you would work on a whole range of projects from all departments across the Authority, from designing the Authority’s Strategic Plan brochure to designing posters for the launch of the County’s Harassment Complaints procedure. You would need a good general education and a Graphic Design qualification or studio training. In order to progress through the career grade you would need a BA in Graphics or BTEC equivalent and Art College training and 2 years’ studio experience using Apple Macintosh computers (or 5 years’ design experience). You would also need to have a good understanding of QuarkXpress, Illustrator, Freehand, Photoshop and Web Design software. A general knowledge of both traditional and digital printing processes would be preferable.

Public Relations Officer
A Public Relations Officer is responsible for working with the Head of Public Relations in providing us with an excellent Public Relations Service. You would assist in implementing the Division’s work on public relations including media relations, internal communications, campaigns, strategies and public information. You would also provide PR expertise in order to plan, deliver and review our PR activity at both corporate and departmental level. There is an established Career Grade structure in place, progression through which is dependent on meeting required criteria.
