Maintenance & Domestic Roles
These occupations form an integral part of the day-to-day work of the County Council, from gardening work for schools, care homes, etc. to the care and maintenance of our vehicles.
Gardener/Handyperson Some residential units in the Social Services Department have a Gardener/Handyperson. The main responsibilities of this post are the control of the central heating system, the undertaking of minor maintenance, repairs to the building and the maintenance and preservation of the gardens, grounds and pathways. There is also a requirement to assist the cleaning staff with some specific tasks such as cleaning the windows and washing down the walls. In some establishments the Gardener/Handyperson is also involved in the banking of money. An understanding and appreciation of the needs and feelings of the service users, for example in respect of privacy, dignity and choices, is an essential criteria for the post. Previous experience of basic gardening and in the safe operation of boilers and central heating systems would be an advantage.
Caretaker Day Centres and Older Persons Homes within the Social Services Department generally have a caretaker post. The focus of the role is the care and cleanliness of the building, and the preparation of accommodation for use by the centre users such as arranging furniture and equipment as necessary. The Caretaker’s role also includes the immediate supervision of the Centre’s cleaning staff, and responsibility for the security of the building and maintenance of the boiler. The Caretaker also has responsibility for stock control of equipment within the Centre. Caretakers normally work Monday to Friday but it is a requirement that they work additional hours on occasions in the evening for events, weekend maintenance and security. A similar role is performed by school caretakers and site managers who are employed directly by schools under the direction of the Head Teacher Experience of operating cleaning machinery and knowledge of the effect, usage and storage of cleaning equipment would be an advantage.
General Assistants/Cleaners General Assistants have responsibility for cleaning within the residential establishments of the Social Services Department, which therefore can involve working with any client group. The main duty is maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the establishment which involves; floor polishing and cleaning all bathrooms, WC’s and washbasins, all internal windows, and as required washing of walls, cleaning of upholstery, and shampooing carpets. In some units domestics also have responsibility for the establishment’s laundry and making the residents beds. No formal qualifications are required but previous experience of using cleaning equipment would be an advantage. The Environment Departments Direct Service Organisation (DSO) also employ Cleaners for cleaning in schools and other buildings occupied by us.
Groundsperson/Tractor Driver - Landscape Operations, Direct Service Organisation (DSO), Environment Department This work involves maintenance, preparation and construction of sports facilities and landscape features. Duties include operating a tractor, mowing, application of chemicals, digging, pruning, edging etc. These staff need to be experienced in working on all aspects of operations, landscape maintenance and preparation, be adaptable and hold a full driving licence.
Motor Vehicle Technician - Engineering Group, Highways Division, Environment Department Motor Vehicle Technicians are responsible for the repair and maintenance of ourl vehicles.
This is a very skilled job that requires you to have completed a recognised apprenticeship and be qualified to City & Guilds standard or have attained NVQ Level 3 in Motor Vehicle Engineering or have eight years practical experience of repair and maintenance of HGV motor vehicle. An HGV licence is essential.
Roadworkers - Engineering Group, Highways Division, Environment Department Roadworkers are required to undertake general highway, bridge construction and maintenance works. Duties include laying bituminous materials, laying kerbs, blocks and paving, carrying out a wide variety of drainage works and operating a range of plant and vehicles. Roadworkers must be motivated to produce high output levels and be able to work as part of a team.
Electricians - Engineering Group, Highways Division, Environment Department Electricians are required to undertake the installation and maintenance of street lighting, traffic signals and illuminated street furniture. The increasing sophistication of this equipment requires qualified electricians who will constantly keep abreast of modern developments. Training is given in the use of specialist plant and equipment and specialist courses are held as required.
Electricians work closely with Roadworkers and must be motivated to produce high output levels and be able to work as part of a team.

Distribution & Warehouse Assistant A Distribution & Warehouse Assistant within County Supplies provides an efficient and effective customer based delivery service and works in the warehouse picking and packing orders. You would complete daily checks on your vehicle and ensure it was kept clean and in good condition. You would need a clean current full UK driving licence Classes B and C1, to be able to operate trucks up to 71/2 tonnes including tail-lifts and powered handling equipment. You would have 2 years’ previous experience as a delivery driver in a multi-product multi-drop distribution business and have good knowledge of the County Area.
