Household Waste Recycling Centre Consultation
The County Council provides 17 Household Waste Recycling Centres throughout the county. Overall, there is a high satisfaction rate amongst users, however, there are variations in recycling performance, operating costs, environmental standards and other facilities between sites.
A number of the older recycling centres were established at waste landfill sites which are now closed or are almost full. National best practice and the County Council’s planning policy is that centres on landfill sites be closed and restored to open countryside when landfill activities end.
Two centres at Sutton and Fiskerton are located on landfill sites and their future needed to be determined. Following a public engagement exercise Nottinghamshire County Council has made the decision to keep open these Household Waste Recycling Centres which were under review.
Councillor Stella Smedley, fromer Cabinet Member for Environment, made the decision to keep the Fiskerton and Sutton centres open until the end of March 2012 subject to planning and licensing conditions and the provision of new facilities.
The consultation exercise which was undertaken in respect of the three sites took the form of questionnaires, focus groups, use of the local media and via the County Council’s website. With a total of just over 1,150 responses from local people there was a strong feeling residents were keen to recycle and to have the facilities to do so in their local area.

Following the review of these three sites the County Council is currently carrying out a county-wide strategic review of all 18 sites looking at access policies and controls to ensure a quality, customer focussed and cost effective service is delivered.
