Household Waste Recycling Centres
Important Notice
Warsop Household Waste Recycling Centre is closed until further notice due to a fire on a neighbouring site. The County Council apologises for any inconvenience this may cause.
We provide 17 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs), which are operated by Veolia Environmental Services on our behalf, including one provided jointly with Nottingham City Council at Calverton.
HWRC Permit System
A permit system is operational at the HWRCs for Nottinghamshire residents wishing to use a van, pick-up or trailer to take their own waste to the HWRCs.
For more information please see the HWRC Permit page.
What items will be accepted at the HWRCs?
The HWRCs are open to householders to dispose of their own household waste. Household waste is typically the waste that you would normally put into your wheeled bin at home, grass cuttings from your garden and items of furniture that you would take with you when you move house.
These items can be delivered in a car without a permit, but a permit system is in operation for vans, pick-ups and trailers. For more information please see the HWRC Permit page. We also ask that you do not deliver waste in horse boxes as some of the waste may be hand sorted and this is not very hygenic.
New restrictions on plasterboard disposal
With effect from 1 April 2009, new restrictions regarding the disposal of plasterboard came into force. The Environment Agency have revised their guidelines and plasterboard, along with other gypsum waste, is now banned from landfill and instead it will have to be recycled. Plasterboard contains high levels of sulphate and links with high sulphate wastes and the production of toxic Hydrogen Sulphide have been identified.
The County Council have responded by setting up separate plasterboard collection facilities at most of its HWRCs for householders to use. Unfortunately, due to lack of space and operational constraints, plasterboard cannot be accepted at the following sites:
- Fiskerton, Fiskerton Road, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, NG25 0TH
- Mansfield, Kestral Park, Kestral Road, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, NG18 5PT
- Gedling, Arnold Lane, Gedling, Nottinghamshire, NG4 4HA
Under no circumstances should plasterboard be placed in your wheeled bin. If you employ a tradesperson to remove your plasterboard, you should ensure they have a Carriage of Waste Licence and takes the material to an appropriately licenced facility.
What items aren't accepted at HWRCs?
Rubble, DIY, soil, building and demolition wastes are not household waste and we are not obliged to accept this type of waste, or provide you with free disposal for it. Skips are provided at the HWRC to recycle small amounts of this waste but a permit system is in operation for vans, pick-ups and trailers. This allows you to dispose of small amounts of this waste generated in your home and helps to avoid some fly-tipping.
For larger loads of this kind of waste, you should make your own arrangements for the disposal of the waste, by hiring a skip or taking the waste to a private transfer station and paying for the disposal. Details of companies offering these services can be found in the yellow pages under; "waste management"
We also do not accept asbestos, car tyres and car parts, or any waste not from your home, such as trade, commercial or industrial waste.
Recycling at HWRCs
Taking your separated recyclables to the sites will reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.
Site operators will always recycle as much as possible provided that you help them. For example, by keeping your green waste separate from your paper.
In 2007/08, almost 60 percent of the waste received on the sites was recycled.
Facilities exist at these centres for the recycling of:
- Glass
- Paper and cardboard
- Plastic bottles
- Textiles
- Cans
- Engine oil
- Car batteries
Please ask for help at the site if you’re uncertain what to do or if you need help to lift or carry your waste.
Pedestrian access to HWRCs
Visiting HWRCs on foot can be dangerous, due to the large numbers of cars and other vehicles accessing the site. In certain circumstances we can arrange for you to dispose of smaller items on foot without cars being present. If you require pedestrian access to a HWRC, we can arrange a time and day with you. Call us on tel: 08449 80 80 80, to make the necessary arrangements.
Feedback
We welcome feedback from you about the operation of the HWRCs (complaints and suggestions). Please contact us.
