Textiles
Textiles are collected via a network of collection banks throughout Nottinghamshire.
The banks accept old or unwanted clothing, bedding and shoes. They should be clean and dry
Once the banks have been emptied, the textiles are hand sorted and are graded according to their condition. Even torn garments can be recycled.
Clothing that can be worn again is either sold in charity shops, made up into packs of complete outfits and given to the homeless, or sent to developing countries.
Textiles that can't be used again are made into cleaning cloths for industry - some are even used for wiping down aeroplanes.
Items that are in particularly poor condition can be stripped down to the fibres and made into ‘filling and flock’. This is for blankets, rugs, new clothing, sound insulation, panels in cars, or padding for furniture.
In times of emergencies abroad, container loads of clothes are sent off. So don't throw away those old clothes, sheets, curtains, and other textiles; recycle them!!
Textile banks that help to support Oxfam can be found at locations shown below. In addition, there are other sites throughout Nottinghamshire that have textile banks that support other charities. Contact your local council for more locations.
