Land Reclamation and Contaminated Land

The remediation and subsequent development of land owned by the County enables the Authority to meet planning requirements.

Planning legislation and guidance places the responsibility on owners and developers to establish the extent of any potentially harmful materials on their sites.

UK policy for the control and treatment of existing contamination is based on the ‘suitable for use’ principle. This means that remediation (clean up) us required where there are unacceptable risks to human health on the environment arising form the actual or intended use of the site. In other words, each case is assessed on a site specific basis and an assessment of risk used to determine the extent of the remedial works needed.

Land reclamation services at Nottinghamshire County Council include:

Mine at Bestwood Country Park

  • Tip Stability, contamination assessments and surveys
  • Decontamination recommendations
  • Recommendations for bio diverse habitat/green after use
  • Mines and quarries inspections

Over the past thirty years over 2000ha of ex military and coalfield land has been reclaimed in Nottinghamshire. Major schemes include:

  • Ruddington Ordnance Depot which is now home to a steam railway heritage centre and business park
  • Linby Colliery which was treated for contaminated land and now is a site for housing
  • Shireoaks Marina which was formerly a colliery yard (mooring details from British Waterways)
