Sites and Monuments Record
What's the Nottinghamshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR)?
The SMR contains information on sites and finds of archaeological interest of all periods, from Palaeolithic to World War II, and of all types from single finds to large industrial complexes.
Where's the information held?
Details are held on a computerised database. There are also maps, photographs, plans and copies of reports on projects that have been carried out.
Recently, major surveys have been done on historic parks and gardens, early coal mining remains and the industrial archaeology of Newark.
Sites with special designations include scheduled ancient monuments, registered parks and gardens of special historic interest and registered historic battlefields.
What's the SMR used for?
As well as being used to provide planning advice, the SMR is a valuable source of information for students, researchers and anyone with an interest in the historic environment.
We also hold related material in the Historic Buildings Record.
