Beacon Award - Nottinghamshire County Council

Woodheat seminar and study tour

Our Woodheat seminar and study tour (21 March 2006) was held in partnership with ReNU Ltd at Center Parcs. The day was intended to be an insight into Nottinghamshire County Council's woodheat initiative, established by the Nottinghamshire Wood Heat Partnership five years ago in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, the Countryside Agency, Government Office for the East Midlands and the East Midlands Development Agency.

The woodheat programme is designed to achieve significant savings in CO2 emissions by the use of wood burning boilers rather than fossil fuels to heat buildings. At the same time it will generate a market for local forestry products and wood waste, with local social, economic and employment benefits.

This event provided the opportunity to learn more about Nottinghamshire's expertise in woodheat whilst also experiencing the practical side to ReNU's operations, including a tour of the new pellet press installation in Newark, the chipping facility in Thoresby and a visit to the woodheat installation at Garibaldi School.

ReNU Ltd has worked successfully in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council to supply wood fuel to many of the Council's Schools. ReNU's main focus is to develop a woodheat infrastructure for the East Midlands and to support woodheat installations from fuel production to delivery and installation.

The open day received an overwhelmingly positive response with over 90% of respondents stating that the event provided them with basis for further improvement:
