Green Issues Transport

Nottinghamshire County Council is committed to looking after Nottinghamshire's environment and working to protect it for future generations, which means tackling the rising levels of car use and traffic congestion.  Where possible, we encourage people to use their car less and travel by more sustainable ways, such as cycling, walking, public transport and car sharing.

The car is an important part of our lives, but many journeys made by car are unnecessary.  For example, there are 10 million empty seats on the road every day just because people drive alone rather than sharing lifts.  In 2006 we launched a car share scheme for Nottinghamshire, which provides a free way of making contact with drivers and passengers who are making the same jouneys as you.  That way you can join up and share the petrol costs and make new friends.  Read more about car sharing, or sign up to our free car share scheme today!

There are other ways of reducing the journeys you make; many trips could be combined with other trips instead of being made separately.  Going to the supermarket on the way home from work, or going to the leisure centre on the way home from visiting people are just some examples.

You could also think about buying a “greener” car next time you change cars. Visit our "drive to be green" page for details of cars that use cleaner fuels and have less harmful emissions.

The way you drive your car can also affect the cost of running it, both to your pocket and to the environment.  Visit our "green driving techniques" page and start getting more miles to the gallon!

We work with employers in Nottinghamshire on preparing travel plans, and the County Council has its own travel plan, STEPS, to ensure its employees have a wide range of choices when planning their journeys to work, and when travelling on business.
