We depend on energy from the world around us to make electricity and fuel. We collect it from places where it's stored, as fuels like uranium or oil buried deep underground. Or we catch it as it passes, like the energy in flowing water or the wind.

Future energy supplies must deliver enough to power all our lives, without unnecessary damage to the planet. We can't rely on fossil fuels for ever - and Nottinghamshire County Council has a proven track record of delivering energy conservation initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In recognition of these achievements we were the first Local Authority to win the ‘National Energy Award’ in 1984 and repeated this success in 1996 by winning the ‘National Public Sector Award’.

We were also awarded Beacon status for sustainable energy in 2005/6. Find out more about our Sustainable Energy Beacon Award.

Sustainable Energy Policy Framework (2009)

After a consultation period from February to April 2009, the Study entitled 'Towards a Sustainable Energy Policy for Nottinghamshire' concluded with the release of a Sustainable Energy Policy Framework document in November 2009. The Policy Framework (which has an Executive Summary) aims to inform local development planning by evidencing the case for higher energy performance standards for new development across the county. The Study was co-ordinated by Nottinghamshire County Council on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Sustainable Energy Planning Partnership (NSEPP) made up of all the Nottinghamshire Districts and the City of Nottingham Council.

A separate Report of Consultation summarises the views expressed at the consultation seminar in February 2009 and the written comments subsequently received in the consultation period; and it sets out the responses of NSEPP which led to changes incorporated into the final Policy Framework.
