Air Quality

Air pollution in Nottinghamshire is a very important issue and one of public concern. Everybody has the right to clean air, it is therefore essential that air quality and pollution be strictly controlled, managed and monitored.

The main responsibility for undertaking this lies with the district councils, and the process may identify areas in which pollution levels exceed particular National Air Quality Objectives.  When this happens, the district council has to declare an "Air Quality Management Area" (AQMA) and develop an action plan to tackle the pollution.  Currently within Nottinghamshire, Rushcliffe Borough Council website: www.rushcliife.gov.uk, Nottingham City Council website: www.nottinghamcity.gov.uk, and Broxtowe Borough Council website: www.broxtowe.gov.uk have all declared AQMAs.

Due to the cross-boundary nature of air pollution, Nottinghamshire County Council is continuing to work on local air quality management with the City Council and the District Councils.  Together, we produced the "Nottinghamshire Air Quality Strategy - A framework for action" [PDF 264KB] .

Nottinghamshire County Council has a responsibility for air quality in relation to transport and we have chapters dedicated to better air quality and environment in our Greater Nottingham Local Transport Plan [PDF 658KB] and the North Nottinghamshire Local Transport Plan [PDF 144KB] .
