photo of a West Bridgford town centre The Building Better Communities (BBC) initiative was launched by the County Council during 2004 aimed at improving the environment across the County.

Over 1000 improvement schemes have been funded through the initiative so far, the majority of which have been directly requested from a very local level. In addition, to assist in delivering these projects over £4million of external funding has been brought into Nottinghamshire from external agencies.

To date the schemes have helped:

  • Make some of our most run down estates more pleasant and safer places to live
  • Refurbish existing town centre improvement schemes to improve their quality, feel and appearance
  • Improve the appearance of our countryside and help locals and visitors alike get more from it.

Since 2004 the initiative has gone from strength to strength and remains a groundbreaking Local Authority project. We are now seeing a real diversity in the types of schemes delivered on the ground. A wealth of improvements have been made to the County’s green estate and sites of local historic significance alongside the major flagship schemes and shopping centre refurbishments that were the mainstay of the first two years projects. We have received many positive comments from residents and visitors alike.

Whether it is bringing ideas forward for consideration, assisting with consultation on the best outcome, helping with delivering projects or keeping them spick and span following completion, people throughout the County have thrown their weight behind BBC and helped us get things done.

Our work has been recognised nationally and internationally when the authority was presented with a 'Green Hero' award from the Green Organisation, an independent group dedicated to recognising and rewarding environmental best practice. We are one of the very first organisations in the UK to receive such recognition.

Browse the brochures on this page that offer more details on the initiative and if you would like to suggest a scheme for your own area please use the scheme suggestion form. All suggestions will require the support of the local County Councillor to be considered for inclusion in a future years programme. A list of all County Councillors is available on this web site if you would like to find your representative.
