Identity Theft Scam
Trading Standards are receiving reports of people receiving calls from people claiming that they can fix their computer.
The phone rings and the caller asks for the householder, quoting their name and address before claiming to be calling from Microsoft or the householders internet provider. The customer is then directed to a website and told to download a progam that allows the caller remote control and access to the customer's computer. They may ask for a fee via credit or debit card. Various "fixes" for the "problem" are then carried out to justify the access being allowed.
Never give your bank details or credit card details to any unsoliciited seller over the telephone, no matter how authentic they sound. These calls often come from outside the UK, making it very difficult to get redress.
If you are concerned about these scams or fear you may have been targeted, please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.
