Tackling disadvantage
Social Enterprise
In July 2002, the Government published its first Social Enterprise Strategy, sharpening the focus and importance of social enterprise activity within the wider range of regeneration activity. Using the Government’s definition :
”A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profits for shareholders and owners.” (Social Enterprise – A Strategy for Success. Dti July 2002)
We have been actively supporting and developing social enterprise and the wider social economy over many years.
Through the Economic Regeneration service we offer:
- a high quality information and advice service
- hands-on, technical advice delivered by staff experienced in social enterprise, business advice and support
- the organisation of events, workshops and seminars with a social enterprise theme
- provide financial assistance directly to existing and potential social enterprises.
Other activity pursued includes the championing of social enterprise across the County and the exploration of the potential for social enterprise to be developed via public procurement routes.
