The Office for National Statistics (ONS) set up a research project in 2000 to investigate the production of post-censal population estimates for geographical areas smaller than local authorities.  As a result of this, data has been released as experimental statistics.  These are statistics undergoing evaluation.

Using these experimental statistics together with local information collected by the Health Authority extracted from patient registers, it has been possible to produce population estimates for wards and parishes.  All these figures are controlled to the population estimates produced for counties and districts.

Please note that the Small Area Estimates for 2002 onwards do not reflect revisions in international migration.
