Nottinghamshire County Council's Energy and Carbon Management team works to reduce the council's carbon emissions and its impact on climate change, reduce costly energy bills, and ensure legal compliance with carbon and energy related legislation. Explore the links below to find out more about what we're doing, or contact us by email: energy.en@nottscc.gov.uk, or tel: 0115 977 4623.

Local Authority Energy Finance Scheme

The Council has an invest to save energy efficiency scheme through which our schools and other council buildings are installed with energy saving measures such as insulation, low energy lighting and better heating controls. This programme is currently saving well over 1000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

Working with our schools

The County Council were awarded £20,000 from the Ashden renewable energy awards - www.ashdenawards.org - which we are using to help schools develop and learn from renewable energy technologies and reduce their CO2 emissions. In addition, we are supporting schools to become Eco Schools and now have nearly 200 schools (about 60 percent) registered with the scheme. Twenty have received the top ‘Green Flag’ award! www.eco-schools.org.uk/apply/green-flag.aspx

Woodheat Project

The Energy and Carbon Management Team is responsible for implementing a Woodheat Project which installs biomass (a renewable fuel) boilers in our schools and other buildings. To date the Council has installed biomass heating at 62 sites around the County, a vast majority of which are schools. The boilers consume some 2,500 tonnes of wood pellets per year and save nearly 6,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

Water Saving

The Council's Improvement programme has been looking at ways of saving money by the better management of water use in our buildings, and aims to save 20% on our future water bills.

Display Energy Certificates

The Energy and Carbon Management Team produces Display Energy Certificates for Council owned buildings, which help the public see the energy efficiency of a building. This is based on the energy consumption of the building as recorded by gas, electricity and other fuel meters.

Adapting to Climate Change

A Local Climate Impacts Profile (LCLIP) [PDF 307KB] has been completed by the council to better understand its exposure to weather and climate. It identifies how Nottinghamshire’s vulnerability to severe weather events affects the local community and the council’s ability to deliver services (which include schools, care homes, highways and parks). This will help the council identify those services most at risk from climate change.

Nottinghamshire County Council is part of the regional Climate East Midlands Adapting to Climate Change project which is helping local authorities to identify risks and opportunities and adapt to these accordingly. Read more on the Climate East Midlands website at: www.climate-em.org.uk

The Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change.

The Council is a signatory to The Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. This commits the Council to tackling the causes and effects of climate change and to encouraging all sectors in our local community to take the opportunity to adapt to the impacts of climate change, reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions and make public their commitment to action. Nottinghamshire Climate Change Partnership

In May 2008 the Council established the Nottinghamshire Climate Change Partnership, which was put in place to lead on delivery of this target. Through this partnership the council works with over 20 organisations across Nottinghamshire to raise awareness of climate change, take action to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and adapt to become better able to live with the effects of a changing climate.

Local Authorities' Energy Partnership

Through our involvement with the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Local Authorities Energy Partnership we established the Everybody’s Talking about Climate Change campaign which provides advice and support for individuals and communities on how we can reduce carbon dioxide emissions in every day life.
