On 28 June the Torch will travel through the districts of Bassetlaw, Mansfield, Newark and Sherwood and Rushcliffe. As Nottinghamshire prepares for this exciting arrival of the Olympic Torch, Nottinghamshire County Council is planning ahead to ensure its safe passage through the county and help local communities enjoy the celebrations.
The county council, as the local highway and traffic authority, has been working on the plans in close co-operation with partner agencies, including Nottinghamshire Police and relevant district councils, as well as LOCOG (the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games), to ensure that roads along the route will be clear on June 28, while at the same time minimising disruption to residents and businesses alike.
Residents and businesses directly affected by the torch relay will be sent a letter advising them of how road closures and parking restrictions will affect them. Road signs will be in place two weeks before the day the relay arrives in Nottinghamshire.
The torch arrives in the county on day 41 of the relay around the UK ahead of London 2012, and there are 11 locations in Nottinghamshire (plus Nottingham City Centre) where the torch will be carried by torch bearers and be on public view. In between those locations the torch will be transported in a convoy of vehicles and will not be on public view.
Local people intending to line the route are encouraged to plan their journey in advance and allow plenty of time. People seeking to travel may also consider walking to work or cycling on that date or using the pocket park and ride sites at Cotgrave or Stragglethorpe.

How can you help make the 28th June a safe and memorable day?
Please remember:
- Traffic control arrangements have been designed to ensure that traffic flows return to normal as soon as possible, however there will inevitably be some congestion as the convoy pass
- Police and stewards will be positioned along the route to offer help and advice and keep people safe
- There will be some parking restrictions (including blue badge parking) along the route
- Civil enforcement officers will be operating along the route – any vehicle considered a risk or hazard could be towed away.
Residents who live on or near the route:
- Please ensure all vehicles are removed from the route in advance of the convoy
- Remember that you will not be able to get in or out of your road on to the route for the period of the road closure
- Avoid arranging any critical deliveries or appointments at this time
- Bin collections may be affected and district councils will be notifying any households whose collection is changed.
Businesses/Schools/place of worship that are on or near the route:
- Please note parking and loading restrictions along the route
- Make alternative arrangements for visitors or deliveries that day
- Notify people who are likely to be on your premises of possible delays that day in advance where possible
- Consider the impact of weddings/funerals/medical appointments/the school run, etc.
- |Trade waste collections my also be affected.
Drivers are advised to:
- Avoid travelling on the route itself around the time of the road closures and plan for delays
- Plan ahead for possible delays as there could also be extra volume of traffic on surrounding roads
- Consider using the pocket park and ride sites at Cotgrave or Stragglethorpe to avoid parking problems around the Trent Bridge area
- Consider making short journeys on foot.
Public transport users:
- Expect delays to buses/taxis on/near the route around the road closure times
- Allow extra time if you need to catch a train/bus.
Why will roads be closed for so long?
- The Torch will be escorted by the sponsors of the event and the police with a supporting convoy for the torch bearers and emergency services. In order for the Torch to pass safely and securely along the route, the roads need to be clear of parked cars and moving vehicles, which means that traffic needs to be stopped at strategic points ahead of the convoy and at all side road junctions for a period of about 30 to 45 minutes.
